Indian Harbor Beach, FL --
- Witnesses reported a man setting a fire inside a construction site
- Melbourne police searched the area for hours for a suspect
- No suspects have been taken into custody
- State fire marshal investigators investigating
Police and the Melbourne Fire Department responded to a fire reported at 961 E Eau Gallie Blvd on Sunday morning.
Local reports say the fire, which was first reported by a construction worker at around 10:30am, was started by an unknown male.
Witnesses say the man was causing damage inside the construction site, which is ultimately going to be an ALDI. The location is formerly Winn-Dixie.
"Officers arrived at the construction site and found smoke in the building from an apparent fire. Melbourne Fire Department crews arrived and contained the blaze", Lt. Amy Perez said.
A perimeter was set up as police used the entire day to search for a suspect.
Police detectives used drones, K-9's, and other devices to try and locate any suspicious subjects. Police were spotted on the roof of the plaza with long guns and shotguns at one point.
Patrons dining next door at the Texas Roadhouse Grill were left terrified and unable to eat their Sunday steak dinners.
As of 8:30pm, police "broke down" the perimeter and called off the search.
It was not known what the possible motives are, and a suspect has not been located. The state fire marshal has been called in to take over the investigation.
