RABIES ALERT For Melbourne Neighborhood

Public health officials are issuing a RABIES ALERT on Lynn Avenue which is in a neighborhood in Melbourne, not far from Ixora Park
The alert was sent out to the area on July 16, and is issued for 90 days, according to the Florida Department of Health.
Officials say a stray cat was found, was tested for rabies and the animal came back confirmed positive.
The Effected Area
Officials say the area affects Lorrine Drive, Charles Drive to U.S. 1, Babcock Drive and Magnolia Drive and all pet owners should get their pets immunized, do not handle any other stray animals, and keep their pets inside. They also recommend not to leave food outside and close trash can lids.
In a statement posted to social media authorities say, "Confirmed case of rabies in a stray cat in the Lynn Avenue area off of Laurie Street on July 17. Rabies is currently present in the wild animal population of the area. Be mindful of your pets and children when outside. We confirmed through neighbors that at least a couple of people and domestic cats were bit/attacked by a rabid, stray cat."
