One Dead, Another Injured in Head-On Cement Truck Crash
GRANT-VALKARIA, Florida
An 81-year-old is dead tonight after his minivan SUV drove across the median on U.S. 1 and crashed head-on with a cement truck.
The horrific incident took place in the northbound lanes of U.S.1 in a remote area between Palm Bay and Sebastian.
Authorities say they do not know why the minivan, which was traveling southbound on U.S.1 suddenly drove across the median.
Traffic was shut down for hours as crews, first responders and other authorities worked the gruesome scene.
"If it was medical related, or something else, we just do not know", The FHP says.
The cement truck driver, who was driving a Titan American cement truck, only had minor injuries.
The Crash Under Investigation
"The tank of the concrete truck had 10 yards of concrete when it came down", sources say.
Witnesses on social media groups described a "large fireball of flames and smoke" the second the crash occurred.
An autopsy will be performed on the driver of the minivan to determine the cause of death, or if medial conditions were a factor. The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating.
