Brevard County Improving Railroad Crossings, Safety
MELBOURNE, Fla -- The proposed Brevard County Sealed Corridor Project could potentially improve safety by installing enhancements at 9-grade crossings along the Florida East Coast Railway, where Brightline also operates its passenger rail service.
Brevard County Commissioners will decide if they want the Space Coast TPO to proceed with the grant application on the county’s behalf. The grant will provide millions of dollars for the projects.
The Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization plans to go after a federal grant through the Railroad Crossing Elimination Program.
Several people have died being struck by the high-speed passenger train known as Brite Line, and the FEC Railroad freight trains who operates on both tracks in Brevard County.
People who live near the tracks told The Blake Moia Show "We have seen many people stopped on the tracks waiting for the light to turn green."
There were 2 separate incidents involving a train striking passenger vehicles along the W.H. Jackson crossing in Melbourne in a week.
